SupremEX®: High-performance metal matrix composites (MMC)
Description
The SupremEX® range represents the perfect combination of lightness, rigidity, and mechanical performance. These metal matrix composites (MMCs) combine an aerospace-grade aluminum alloy with silicon carbide (SiC) reinforcement. The result: ultra-high-performance materials with unmatched properties for the most demanding structural applications.
Manufactured using powder metallurgy, SupremEX® alloys have a homogeneous and stable microstructure, offering a unique combination of strength, rigidity, wear resistance, and machinability. The different variants available—SupremEX® 215XK, 225XE, and 640XA—can meet a wide range of technical requirements.
Main applications
SupremEX® alloys are designed for cutting-edge industries where performance and reliability are non-negotiable:
- Satellite structures
- Aerospace optical systems and sensors
- Aircraft engine components
- Automotive powertrain components
- Defense applications
- Micromechanics, medical, motorsports
Metallurgy
Each SupremEX® version incorporates a different aluminum matrix and a specific percentage of SiC particles, optimized for the intended use:
| Product | Matrix | SiC (vol.) | Particle size | Comments |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 215XK | 2009 | 15 % | 5 µm | Good compromise between rigidity and ductility |
| 225XE | 2124A | 25 % | 3 µm | High mechanical strength and fatigue resistance |
| 640XA | 6061B | 40 % | 3 µm | Maximum rigidity and exceptional thermal stability |
The mechanical mixing process ensures uniform distribution of SiC particles, resulting in a fine, homogeneous microstructure.
Machinability
Contrary to popular belief about reinforced composites, SupremEX® stands out for its excellent machinability using conventional techniques. Its dimensional stability allows for very tight tolerances, which are particularly valued in the aerospace and optics industries.
Alloys such as 640XA are even compatible with high-speed machining, which reduces cycle times in production.
Corrosion resistance
SupremEX® products offer good corrosion resistance in controlled environments. However, for highly aggressive environments, a suitable surface treatment or anodic coating is recommended, particularly for marine or prolonged outdoor applications.
One of the strengths of the 640XA is its coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of 13 ppm/°C, which is perfectly compatible with nickel plating, preventing stress during assembly or plating.
Standard Sizes
SupremEX® products are available in a wide variety of machinable formats:
- Shaped billets and blocks
- Forged or near-net-shape parts
